NDIA was formed March 1, 1997 as a result of a merger between the former American Defense Preparedness Association (ADPA), which was founded in 1919, and the National Security Industrial Association (NSIA), founded in 1944.
NDIA's mission is to provide a legal and ethical forum for the interchange of ideas between government and industry to resolve industrial problems of joint concern. NDIA's priorities include the business and technical aspects of the government-industry relationship, embracing government policies and practices in the entire spectrum of government acquisition efforts.
More than 56 chapters serve over 26, 000 members in the United States, and the Association is supported by nearly 900 corporate members representing a broad spectrum of government and industry. All are important elements in keeping NDIA informed about defense requirements and needs. Chapters serve as the focal point for industry's coordination with regional military commands and working levels of the federal government in the field. The Association magazine NATIONAL DEFENSE covers pertinent business and technology news and also addresses issues of concern to industry and government.
The Association has three affiliates:
Association for Enterprise Integration (AFEI), The National Training Systems Association (NTSA), and Women in Defense (WID).
